ABOUT.
WHO.
Melissa Cartagena, aka Dr. C, is a certified English teacher from the United States who has been teaching English online to non-native speakers since 2021. She had her own language journey that showed her the value of comprehensible input while learning a language. Dr. C took Spanish in high school, but could barely even introduce herself even though she received “A’s” in her Spanish classes. After a decade of trying and failing to learn Spanish using expensive software and apps, she decided to find the most effective way to learn a language. Her search led her to theories of Steve Kaufmann and Stephen Krashen, both of whom argue that comprehensible input, such as listening and reading, as the key to fluency. Comprehensible input and hearing a language in context is how we all learn our first language as children. Using their method, she was able to learn more Spanish in two months than she had in the previous decade. Invigorated by her success, she became certified to teach English and started giving classes online to help others who were on their own language journey.
HOW.
Dr. C's was inspired to start the podcast after hearing from her students that they were struggling to understand native speakers. From her own goal of trying to learn Spanish, she knew that finding resources at the intermediate and lower-advanced levels can be very difficult.
Dr. C understood the frustration of reaching a point where it felt like progress had stalled, and she realized the importance of keeping the momentum going. She realized that there was a need for a resource that could provide students with interesting and engaging content to help students continue to improve their listening comprehension, vocabulary, and overall English fluency.
This led to the creation of the Learn English Podcast. The podcast was designed to be a dynamic resource that could take students beyond basic comprehension, enrich their vocabulary, and ultimately help them become more fluent in English. Instead of boring grammar lessons or beginner-level content that is too easy, episodes are spoken by a native-English speaker while discussing a wide-variety of topics that students will actually want to listen to. Hearing English in context allows learners to learn the nuance of the language, specific vocabulary, and key words and phrases to help them sound like a native.
